Advanced Photography Courses

My online creative photography classes are designed for photographers who have mastered the basics of taking and editing their digital photographs and want to move on to the next stage, and for more advanced photographers who want to extend their range of skills

 

The classes are structured to cover one or more advanced topics each week and run alongside a series of monthly workshops and weekly tasks to reinforce learning. Over a period I would expect to cover most or all of the following topics:

  1. Advanced Camera Settings and Techniques

    • Understanding and utilising manual mode

    • In-depth study of ISO, shutter speed, and aperture

    • Using histogram for better exposures

    • Advanced focus techniques: back button focus, focus stacking

  2. Composition and Framing

    • Mastering the rules of composition: rule of thirds, leading lines, framing, symmetry

    • Knowing when to break the rules for creative effect

    • Perspective and angle for visual storytelling

  3. Lighting Techniques

    • Advanced natural lighting techniques: golden hour, blue hour, overcast light

    • Nightime photography

    • Introduction to artificial lighting setups

    • Understanding and using flash: off-camera flash, fill flash

  4. Genre-Specific Techniques

    • Advanced landscape photography: HDR, long exposure, astrophotography

    • Advanced portrait photography: posing, lighting, environment

    • Advanced wildlife photography: tracking, predicting behavior, lens selection

    • Street and documentary photography: ethics, storytelling, candid shots

  5. Post-Processing Techniques

    • Advanced Photoshop skills: layers, masking, frequency separation, compositing

    • Using Photoshop to generate multi-layer images

    • Understanding and using Lightroom: advanced editing, cataloging, presets

    • Black and white conversion techniques

  6. Printing and Presentation

    • Color management for accurate printing

    • Understanding different print mediums and their impacts

    • Portfolio development: selecting, organising, and presenting your work

    • Book production

  7. Advanced Gear Knowledge

    • Exploring different camera systems: DSLR, mirrorless, medium format

    • Lens selection for different genres

    • Understanding and using filters: polarizers, ND filters, GND filters

  8. Photography Projects

    • Conceptualising and executing a photo series

    • Experimenting with creative techniques: long exposure, multiple exposures, intentional camera movement

  9. Critique and Feedback

    • Giving and receiving constructive critique

    • Understanding how to improve through feedback

    • Interpreting and learning from masters of photography.
