Frequently Asked Questions

Is street photography legal in the UK?

Yes. In the UK it is legal to photograph in public places.
That said, legality is only part of the picture. Throughout the course we also talk about ethics, respect, and personal boundaries, so you can photograph confidently while remaining considerate of others.

I’m not confident photographing people — is this course still suitable?

Absolutely. In fact, that’s exactly why this course exists.

Most people start street photography feeling awkward or unsure. We build confidence gradually, working at a pace that feels comfortable for you. There’s no pressure to photograph anyone in a way that doesn’t feel right.

Do I have to photograph strangers close up?

No. Street photography is much broader than close-up portraits of strangers.

We explore many approaches, including:

  • Working with light, shadow, and atmosphere

  • Photographing from a distance

  • Details, gestures, and relationships

  • Scenes without obvious faces

You’ll develop an approach that suits your personality and comfort level.

What if someone challenges me while I’m photographing?

This is a common worry. During the course we talk through practical, real-world ways to handle these situations calmly and politely — including how to avoid them in the first place.

Most concerns can be managed with awareness, positioning, and confidence rather than confrontation.

Do I need prior street photography experience?

No experience is needed.

The course is designed for people who are new to street photography or who have tried it but never felt comfortable or confident. Everything is explained clearly and built up step by step.

What camera do I need?

Any camera with manual or semi-automatic controls is suitable, including mirrorless and compact cameras.

The emphasis is on seeing, timing, and awareness, not equipment. No specialist lenses or gear are required.

Will I get feedback on my photographs?

Yes. Image review and feedback are a key part of the course.

Each week we look at your photographs together and discuss what’s working, what could be stronger, and how to move forward — always constructively and without judgement.

What happens after the 6 weeks?

By the end of the course you’ll have a clear approach to street photography and the confidence to continue independently.

If you wish, the course can also lead into:

  • Ongoing 1-to-1 tuition

  • A longer personal project

  • Portfolio development

  • Preparation for exhibitions or distinctions

There’s no obligation — just options.
